Days 3 through 6, Post Surgery

Hi all,

Sorry for not posting earlier, but we've been busy! Here's David in his "no-nos", the arm restraints he's required to wear for the next 3 weeks. He's pretty accepting of them now, and they're meant to keep his hands out of his mouth. If anything hard or blunt gets in his mouth, he could rip open his sutures, which means another palate surgery and probably permanent holes (fistulas) in his mouth. So we're super vigilant.

For example, Dave and Rea were serving bacon for breakfast the day after David's discharge, and a piece fell on the floor. David was free of his high chair when the bacon was airborne. He, Kevin and I simultaneously leapt for the bacon, and we grabbed it just in time! Whew! Shortly after that, Emily tried to stick a syringe in David's mouth to give him his medicine. Another quick save by the parents!

Here's the bad news...David is grumpy as heck, and mealtimes are exhausting since he's so ticked off that someone has to feed him, and soft stuff, at that. For 3 weeks! So he's getting lots of ice cream just to get the medicines in. The good news is...speech is coming! He said "Mommy", "Momma", "Rea", and and "Grandma" in a crystal clear voice! So Kevin's following him around the house chanting, "say Daddy, say Daddy!" Nothing.

So where's Emily in all this? Take a look...



SHE SPRAINED HER WRIST!! She fell off Rea's lap the day David was due to be discharged and caught her wrist beneath her. So now we have 2 kids with 1 working arm between them. (David's getting a short rest from his restraints here.) Yikes!!
